General Motors has recently reported that the company has teamed up with Chinese partners in order to develop a new engine that instead of four, would be equipped with three cylinders.

The new engines would be present in Volts and ELR models, which would be much lighter than previous models as a result, increasing the vehicles’ efficiency. The company hopes to develop the technology and have it approved promptly in order to fit Volts with the new engine. According to GM, Cadillac ELR plug-ins will soon follow.

Experts say that this proves a trend since Ford has already developed a three-cylinder engine of its own to fit Fiesta models.
