According to a series of news agencies, a new smart phone app has been designed by a University research team to monitor the driver the hazards their surroundings may pose.

The app uses the sensors and the camera on the phone, which must be mounted to the windshield of the vehicle to spot drowsiness or distraction signals. When the app detects something that could pose as a risk, an alarm goes off alerting the driver.

The app also monitors the traffic and alerts when a there is a risky driver performing a potentially dangerous lane change. The app also alerts when vehicles get to close to one another. The designers of this new app hope to one day have the app detect when a driver is also under the influence.
