The certification of a pre-owned car has some implications and details in its title that might not reflect reality, according to some experts.

When a car is labeled as ‘Factory Certified Pre-Owned’, that means several things. A buyer should be aware that only authorized dealers that are certified and legally capable of holding certain standards concerning specific makes are allowed to sell a factory CPO vehicle. However, some dealers simply recondition or use a third party certification, which may not ensure the quality of the vehicle the dealerships is selling.

Chevy’s new Chevy Confidence Program, which was first launched in July, is a promotion that reportedly offers consumers no-hassle pricing until 2012.

This program was brought into place by General Motors to help clear out the old 2012 inventory of vehicles and make room for the 2013 models. This was a good way for them to clear up their stock without making consumers feel as if Chevy was just ditching the cars and trying to sell all units as quickly as possible.

The dangers of being scammed by a ‘curbstoner’, a person who sells several cars regularly with no license or place of business, have increased with on-line car sales and is the subject of a case study released by stopcurbsstoning.com.

According to the study, these scam salesmen prefer to concentrate on the low end of the used-car market. Another scam that has been raising eyebrows across the country involves e-mail scams that will contain the story of someone who just needs to sell their car at a low overall price including shipping and handling cost.

When buying a car online consumers are urged to keep in mind that if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
