Several news agencies have indicated that new fuel efficiency standards have been put in place and because of that, automakers are racing against time to manufacture vehicles that get more miles per gallon to respond to government requirements.

Certain critics have been voicing their opposing to the new increase of the fuel efficient standard due to the fact that statistics show that since the first fuel emission standard was set in 1976, 46,000 Americans were killed in accidents that would otherwise not be fatal before the standard was put in place.

Critics say they believe strict fuel efficient standards force the auto industry to manufacture vehicles that are not as safe.
